This 19th-century tri-leg stool from China's Shanxi province charms with its top-heavy form and timeworn texture. Crafted of elm with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the robust stool stands on three tapered legs linked with interlocking stretchers and supports a thick, solid wood top, which likely doubled as a chopping block for fruits and vegetables in a provincial kitchen. Rich with character, the full-moon seat is beautifully textured with swirling grain patterns and a soft, burnished finish.
