Banyan Tree Stone Drum

As if blotted with ink and brushed calligraphy, this polished painting stone drum from Guangxi province is marked with swirling patterns of dark and light. Selected for its organic patterning and subdued color, the low table was sculpted from a solid block of stone, hand-turned to the traditional drum form of Chinese garden stools. Anchoring its surroundings with the permanence of stone furniture, the drum is ideal indoors or out as a stool, pedestal or side table.

Sculptural and unusual stone formations have long been fixtures of the scholars' studio and garden, displayed as sources of beauty and creative inspiration. Known as gongshi, or scholars' rocks, the stones were said to help focus the mind and inspire creativity.
