The stool is a central fixture of Chinese furniture culture. Found in a variety of materials and forms, the stool transcends class lines, as much at home in the provincial courtyard as it is in the grand hall of a wealthy estate. Whether worked from fine hardwood or cobbled together from scraps, the ever-practical stool finds its place in all corners of the home.

Dated to the early 20th century, this rustic stool charms with a simple splayed-leg design and well-worn finish. Crafted of northern elm (yumu) with mortise-and-tenon joinery, without the use of nails or screws, the stool features a large round seat and four splayed legs linked by straight stretchers. The original lacquer finish has weathered beautifully over a century of use and now textures the stool's timeless form with subtle traces of red. Reminiscent of the autumn full moon, the stool's expansive top surface doubles as a side table, the perfect perch for a drink or a stack of books.
