This hand held pewter dish is an excellent example of fine Chinese metalwork of the 20th century. During the Qing dynasty, pewter craftsmen experimented with new techniques, showing the influence of Western silver tableware styles as well as Manchu dining culture. The two dishes are bound by a hinge, making it easily foldable and therefore portable for everyday use. Along the middle hinge and the perimeter of the dish is a charming trailing vine and leaf detail. A bat with wings outstretched decorates the opposite end, a symbol for happiness and good fortune. The little dish is finished with a low relief maker's mark on the base.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
