This delicate serving tray dates to the early 19th century and brings a sophisticated restraint to the opulence of Qing-dynasty lacquerware. The simple, rectangular form is enlivened by vibrant finish of cinnabar-red lacquer, meticulously applied layer-upon-layer to achieve an opaque color and glossy texture. A botanical border of peony blossoms and leaves decorates the beveled sides, carved into the thick lacquer finish in low relief, a traditional method known as diaoqi (雕漆).

Minor splits to lacquer.
