This petite ceramic figure of a crouching cat is designed after traditional Chinese headrests, used to maintain good posture, preserve elaborate hairstyles and keep the head cool during sleep. Whether functional or purely decorative, such headrests were crafted from a variety of materials and were often decorated with elaborate patterns or symbolic motifs.

Sculpted of glazed earthenware, this small headrest depicts a kitten with a black-and-white coat relaxing in a loaf position. Credited with a power to protect against evil spirits, perhaps for its ability to see in the dark, the cat is the ideal guardian for a headrest pillow, protecting its owner while they dream.

Losses to both ears.
