Formed around a simple wooden frame, this papier-mâché storage box is a charming example of Chinese folk art. Crafted with old newspapers and dyed rice paper, the box would have been used in a provincial home to store clothing, hats and other personal items.

The exterior is patterned with a printed floral design of pink peonies and camellia blossoms, and the interior is lined with pages from a student's workbook, dotted with cartoonish graphics and marked with homework answers drawn in pencil. Today, the vintage box is ideal as a decorative vessel or a storied way to store household clutter.

Some wear to interior.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
