This early 20th-century ceramic stool honors tradition with a drum-form shape and folk painted decoration. The earthenware drum is sculpted with gently swelling sides and is beautifully glazed with neutral earth-tones in a style characteristic of cizhou ware.

Loosely brushed in warm brown underglaze atop a creme-white slip base, the drum is painted on both sides with lush peony blossoms, emblems of springtime and symbols of love, affection and beauty. A pattern of dots ringing the top imitates nails used to stretch a hide on an actual drum, and lion-shaped handgrips stamped into the sides imitate metal drop handles. Traditionally used as a place to rest one’s feet, ceramic drum stools are ideal today as side tables, pedestals or garden seating.

Decoration to the top is painted over glaze and should be treated with special care.
