This large glazed jar was hand-crafted in China's Shanxi province over a century ago and was originally used for pickling food. Masterfully crafted, the jar is patterned in high relief, featuring medallion portraits of chrysanthemums, plum blossoms, bamboo, and pine branches. A textured trim of scalloped and bead-like motifs border the jar's lip, framed by a pattern of chrysanthemum blossoms and shou symbols of longevity. The rim is left unglazed, the exposed ceramic set in beautiful contrast with the rich brown glaze that drips and pools down the jar's sides. Today, the monumental pot lives on as a statement planter or fish pond, ideal indoors or out.
