A thin black glaze coats the stout body of this early 20th-century terra cotta kitchen jar. As evidenced by the glazed interior, this wide-mouth jar was once used daily in a provincial Chinese kitchen for fermenting foods and condiments. The kitchen jar has a slightly squat form with a rounded rim and is flanked by two small strap handles.

Stopping just short of the base, the glaze collects and pools on the banded surface of the jar, revealing a brown underglaze and creating an organic striped pattern. The textured surface not only provides an interesting layered glaze design but a unique tactile experience. This small kitchen jar exemplifies the timeless appeal of handcrafted pottery and makes a wonderful vase or planter.
