Chinese courtyard homes were traditionally designed without closets, so trunks such as this were frequently used for safekeeping and storage. This very fine early 19th-century example, lined in cedar, was likely used in a aristocratic home for clothing. The sides are covered with panels of delicately woven reeds cloaked in lacquer. The original brass fittings are pierced with shapes like Chinese coins, representing prosperity, and the wan symbol, a backwards swastika, which was widely used in ancient times to represent prosperity and good fortune.
