Crafted in Shanghai, a bustling port city at the forefront of taste and culture in early 20th-century China, this hand-knotted Art Deco carpet has an unusually subdued taupe-colored open field with a highly stylized cloud border. Floral arrangements adorn each corner along with a peacock with wings outspread, a symbol of beauty and dignity. The diagonal arrangement of minimal floral and natural elements on an open field was typical for many of the Chinese Art Deco rugs produced in the early to mid-20th century.
