This elegant garden stool was carved from a solid block of limestone by artisans in the Shanxi region of China. Drum-form stools such as this were traditionally used in gardens and outdoor pavilions where upper class scholars read, wrote, discussed art, and, in general, developed their intellectual sensibilities. This example has a minimal design, decorated only by a ring of circles at top and bottom, mimicking nail heads that secure the hide tops on actual drums. There is subtle, variegated rust color from iron content in the stone. We love this stone drum as a side table juxtaposed by a mid-century seat, or as a stool in a grove of trees as the ultimate place to ponder.

“I am particularly fond of PAGODA RED as we have known the family for so long. Betsy is a professional in every way and her intelligent taste comes from a long line of family knowledge in the arts. She and her team are the very best to work with and we find treasures with every visit!”
