This magnificent six-panel Chinese folding screen depicts a lively battle scene with gilt brushwork and fine inlay of soapstone, agate, jade, jasper, mother-of-pearl and bone. The screen is a beautiful example of the inlay technique known as baibao qian (Hundred Treasures Inlay), a style that circulated rather widely throughout the Qing dynasty.
Likely depicting a historic battle or literary tale, the scenery features footsoldiers and horseback cavalry gathered from all directions at the gate of a grand palace fortress, while the palace court looks on from above. Colorful stones form a rocky terrain dotted with parasol trees, while precise brushwork in gold pigments traces the finer details of the flowering underbrush and swirling clouds overhead.
At the base of each panel is further stone inlay of a cluster of flowers, including chrysanthemums, peonies, plum blossoms and camellia. The opposite side of the screen is simply decorated with black lacquer and painted brushwork of round floral medallions.
Minor splitting to lacquer. Minor restoration to lost inlay. Multiple brass foot plates are replacement.
