Deceptively simple, this rustic stool from the early 20th century shows off the ingenious joinery methods traditionally used by Chinese carpenters. The stool's three splayed legs are supported by stretcher bars that interlock at the center to form a triangle. Not only does this provide stability, it adds a sense of balance and design intrigue to the otherwise simple form. The stool has gained a beautifully textured finish from over a century of use. A painted character on the underside of the seat identifies its previous owner, who likely used the stool daily as a form of casual seating.
