This square center table dates to the mid-19th century and wonderfully exemplifies Qing-dynasty furniture design. Found at the center of social activity, Chinese square tables were used on a daily basis for eating meals, serving tea, or playing games.

The table has a waisted apron with square corner legs ending in hoof feet and linked by straight stretchers. The interior corners where the legs meet the apron are carved with unusual rounded cutouts, a detail that softens the otherwise angular design. The solid square top is cut from a single burl wood specimen, patterned with swirling wood grain that catches the light beautifully. Burl wood furniture such as this was given pride of place in the scholars' studio and appreciated as a source of beauty and creative inspiration.

Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art.
